Robots dont sleep2/1/2024 ![]() When your breathing slows, your mind stops racing, which helps you sleep. That is not to say the science behind the sleep robot is completely off. I don’t know how I ended up falling asleep, but the next morning I woke up with my knees pinned under my son’s legs and the robot baby on the floor. I tried sleeping on my back and putting it on my chest, but at 4 pounds, it’s heavy. ![]() But my shoulders were sore that night from carrying heavy bags earlier that day, and I couldn’t get comfortable. The robot is ergonomically shaped for spooning, so the best way to sleep with it is on your side. “Does it have to sleep with us?” whined my then-9-year-old. “This is absolutely ridiculous,” said my husband. You can also choose from a range of relaxation sounds (such as “rain,” “river,” or “whales”) to accompany the breathing, while sensors detect carbon dioxide output from your mouth and nose (info that the robot stores locally, not on a server) in order for the Somnox to sync up to your breathing and gradually help it slow down. The idea is that when you hug it, and feel and hear it breathing, you too will eventually inhale and exhale in unison and settle down. I can program the pace of its breathing via an app, from slow to even slower. After I charged it up, it took its first “breaths” with the touch of a button-that is, it subtly heaved up and down where a baby’s chest might be, making a rhythmic sound somewhere between a low whir and a buzz. It arrived within a week, in a portable cardboard box and with a birth certificate and a cotton “onesie.” Instead of a robot per se, it looks like a lima bean but plush and roughly the size of an exceptionally plump newborn. I have insomnia (sometimes)!” What I didn’t have was a spare $600 to buy one, so I requested a loaner. When I learned about this, I thought to myself: “ I have anxiety. The sleep robot is the brainchild of four Dutch robotic engineers and born out of a desire to help wean one of their moms, who suffered from anxiety and insomnia, off the medications she took to help her sleep. And yet, when I heard about the Somnox sleep robot, I couldn’t help but bring it on board, too. Did I mention that we sleep in a full-size bed? Sometimes I fall asleep cursing how full my bed is. ![]() and takes his spot between us diagonally and the necessary foam pillow I use for my knees. In it are my husband, who has very broad shoulders and often sleeps on his back the odd paraphernalia from his CPAP machine for his sleep apnea my son, who habitually bulldozes his way in around 3 a.m. As all those #blessed people on social media like to say, my life is full.
